Summary
James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor and director Joanne Woodward. Woodward speaks of her upbringing in Thomasville, Georgia, where her mother's love of the movies influenced her choice of career; her parents' divorce when she was 13; relocating to Greenville, South Carolina, and attending Greenville High School, where she played the lead in plays and was mentored by the head of the school's drama department; her drama studies at Louisiana State University, her move to New York City to pursue a career as an actress; her work with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse; meeting her future husband Paul Newman; and her audition and acceptance into Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio. Woodward describes her role in "Interlude," a 1954 episode of the Four star playhouse TV anthology, and her ensuing seven-year motion picture contract with 20th Century Fox; her role as Eve in the 1957 motion picture Three faces of Eve, for which she won an Academy award; her longstanding film collaboration with Newman beginning with The long hot summer (1958); returning to motion pictures in the 1968 drama Rachel, Rachel, directed by Newman; her experiences working with and being directed by her husband; how she prepares for a role, and the difference between her approach to acting and that of her husband; her role as India Bridge in the 1990 motion picture Mr. and Mrs. Bridge; earning her bachelor's degree in 1990 at Sarah Lawrence College; her association, beginning in 1995, with the Blue Light Theatre, whose mission is to enable young actors to work with older, experienced actors; becoming artistic director of the Westport Playhouse, where she produced a revival of Thornton Wilder's Our town starring her husband, which went on to a Broadway run; and lastly, combining her marriage with her career. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of the works discussed. A brief question and answer session with Woodward and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
