Description
1 videocassette (VHS) (53 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with Irish actor and theatrical producer Gabriel Byrne. Byrne speaks about his upbringing in Dublin, the son of a barrel maker for Guinness and a mother who instilled in him a love of language and poetry; his childhood desire to be a Catholic priest and his seminary training; attending University College Dublin, where he studied archaeology, linguistics, and Gaelic; discovering his passion for acting at age 29; his involvement with Dublin's Focus Theatre and London's National Theatre; and his part on the long-running Irish television series The Riordans. Byrne examines his roles in the motion pictures Excalibur (1981); Gothic (1986); Siesta (1987); Miller's Crossing (1990); Into the west (1992); Little women (1994); The usual suspects (1995); The man in the iron mask (1998); End of days (1999); and The lark in clear air (1996), which he wrote and produced for HBO. Byrne, who at the time of the interview was starring in the Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's A moon for the misbegotten, speaks about his return to stage acting; his approach to acting; and the importance of preserving his Irish culture. A brief question and answer session with Byrne and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
