- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor John Hurt. Hurt speaks of his upbringing in Derbyshire, England, the son of an Anglican clergyman; attending the all-boys St. Michaels prep school, where he acted in plays, and then the Lincoln School where he was told by his headmaster he "wouldn't stand a chance" as an actor; his studies in London in fine art; his decision to become an actor, and his acceptance by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with a scholarship; his early work on television, and in many plays. Hurt discusses his portrayal of the flamboyant and militant homosexual Quentin Crisp in the television movie The naked civil servant (1975), and examines his roles in such motion pictures as A man for all seasons (1966), Midnight express (1978), The elephant man (1980), and Nineteen eighty-four (1984). The discussion is illustrated with excerpts from some of these works. Hurt speaks also about his love of acting; the rehearsal process; and his view that acting should be fun. A brief question and answer session with Hurt and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
