- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film, television and stage director Arthur Penn, and with actor Estelle Parsons. Penn talks about his upbringing and family life; his early involvement in community theater following his discharge from the Army; attending Black Mountain College in Asheville, N.C. and forays into theater there with fellow students Merce Cunningham, John Cage and Buckminster Fuller; his work as a director for live television in the 1950s, and his first job directing for the stage; his support of the acting technique learned from his drama teacher Michael Chekhov; his involvement with the Actors Studio, from which he hired many actors; and his career as a director of such hit Broadway plays as Two for the season, Toys in the attic, An Evening with Nichols and May, and All the way home. Parsons, who joins the conversation at this point, speaks about her experience rehearsing a play directed by Penn at the Berkshire Theatre Festival Playhouse in Stockbridge, Mass. Penn discusses his direction of such films as The left handed gun, The chase, The miracle worker, Bonnie and Clyde, and Little big man, and the discussion is illustrated with clips from these works. A brief question and answer session with Penn and Parsons and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
