Biography (note)
  • Bohuslav Martinů's Veselohra na mostĕ (i.e. Comedy on the bridge) was first performed on Czech Radio, Prague, in 1937. The first stage performance was at Hunter College, New York City, in 1951.
  • Hans Krása's Brundibár was written in 1938 and first staged in 1942 by the children at a Jewish orphanage in Prague. Soon thereafter the composer and most of the orphanage's children were transported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where the opera was performed some fifty-five times. Subsequently, Krása and most of the performers were transported to Auschwitz, where they were killed.
