- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actress, comedian, singer, dancer, and writer Carol Burnett. Burnett speaks of her parents, and her upbringing by her grandmother in Hollywood, Calif.; attending the University of California, and her involvement in its drama department; moving to New York City, where her nightclub performance of the comic song I made a fool of myself over John Foster Dulles resulted in invitations to appear on several television programs; her Broadway debut in the starring role in the 1959 musical Once upon a mattress, produced and directed by George Abbott; and becoming a regular on the television program The Garry Moore show. Burnett expounds on having "the gift" of comedy, her view of herself as a comedic actor, her use of self-deprecating humor, and its relationship to her feelings about herself and her looks. Lastly, Burnett discusses assembling her cast of comic actors Harvey Korman, Lyle Waggoner, Vicki Lawrence and Tim Conway, for her television variety show The Carol Burnett show, which ran from 1967 to 1978. She discusses some of the show's memorable skits, including Went with the the wind, The kidnapping, and Mama's family, which portrayed an extremely dysfunctional family that in some ways mirrored Burnett's own. A brief question and answer session with Burnett and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
