Summary
Don Scardino, the recently appointed artistic director of the Off-Broadway production company Playwrights Horizons, talks with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Scardino expounds on his adjustments to being the head of the nonprofit group, which was previously run by Andre Bishop; the works he has produced there, including On the bum by Neal Bell and the play by Eric Overmyer called The heliotrope bouquet by Scott Joplin & Louis Chauvin; the relative ease he finds in promoting his organization, which is dedicated to the development of the playwright; his desire to bring in underrepresented African-American and women writers like Lynn Siefert and Marlaine Meyer; what he sees as the dearth of new plays being produced in New York City; his earlier career as an actor, and making the transition from being an actor to a director of shows such as the Broadway hit A few good men; and his production of seven new musicals at his theater.
