Summary
Nigel Redden moderates a panel discussion about the installation Slow dancing. Filmmaker David Michalek introduces the technical aspects of Slow dancing, a hyper-slow motion video portrait that depicts the movement of 45 dancers from around the world captured at 1,000 frames per second, using a camera primarily utilized by the military to analyze weapons systems. The dancers include some of today's foremost modern and classical dancers and choreographers, as well as recognized master interpreters of a range of traditional and contemporary dance forms. After performing his 5 second dance, Desmond Richardson joins the panel. Michalek discusses the evolution of using extreme slow motion to film dancers and discusses the project as an extension of portrature. Lourdes López talks about the film as a work of art. Richardson describes what it's like to see himself dancing so slowly. Michalek discusses the influence of video artist Bill Viola on his own work and the randomness of the sequence of dancers in the installation. After performing her five second dance, Wendy Whelen joins the panel and describes her own feelings about seeing herself dancing in slow motion. Michalek talks about the limitations of both time and space for each of the dancers. López talks about the capacity of Slow dancing to draw in a larger dance audience. Michalek talks about where the installation will be exhibited. Richardson talks about the visceral effect of watching dance in slow motion. Michalek describes the process of finding dancers to participate in the project. Herman Cornejo performs his five second dance.
