Summary
Writer and director Mike Leigh discusses his film Topsy-turvy with Theater talk co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. The film is about Gilbert & Sullivan and the creation of their opera The Mikado. Leigh speaks about his desire as a filmmaker to depict the Victorian period in which the story is set, and also to portray the painstaking struggle involved in putting together a theatrical production. Leigh discusses his efforts to accurately portray lyricist/librettist W. S. Gilbert and composer Sir Arthur Sullivan, as well the major performers of the D'Oyly Carte company; his casting of Allan Corduner, an accomplished musician, as Sullivan; and how his film evolved out of a series of improvisational sessions with the actors. Leigh speaks also about his film career, and why he prefers directing for film over the theater.
