- Description
- 1 videodisc (NTSC) (36 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- This program features a panel discussion about Sonatas and interludes, the title both of John Cage's piece for prepared piano, and of the dance choreographed to the music by Richard Tanner for New York City Ballet. The dance is performed in several movements, interspersed with the panel discussion. Pianist Cameron Grant discusses Cage's musical techniques, which involve placing screws, bolts, strips of plastic and rubber, and other materials in the piano to produce unusual sounds. Tanner discusses the process of choreographing to this music, mirroring its repetitions and sonic qualities in movement. The recording's sound is sometimes unclear, and the camera view of the dancing is sometimes blocked by a column.
