Summary
Sarah Rothenberg moderates a panel discussion with poet James Tate. Tate discusses his poetry as depicting every day events from which the imagination takes over; his own presence in his poetry; when he knew he was a poet; his first collection, The lost pilot; whether poetry has let him down; what poetry brings into people's lives; how much he thinks about the readers of his poetry; how long does it take him to write a poem; and the treatment of time in his poetry. Tate reads two of his poems: Restless leg syndrome and The radish. Composers Fred Ho, Charles Wuorinen, Arthur Kreiger, and George Flynn join the panel discussion. Fred Ho talks about why he chose to use Tate's poetry in his compositions. Arthur Krieger discusses his use of electronic sounds in his piece Never again the same. Charles Wuorinen explains his own reading of the same poem. George Flynn discusses his choice of Tate's poem From an island. James Tate describes how it feels to be among these composers who have chosen to use his poetry in their compositions.
