- Description
- 1 videodisc (NTSC) (14 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- This film presents a poetic tribute to two dancers, Evelyn Hart and Rex Harrington. They are joined respectively by the renowned cellists Amanda Forsyth and Shauna Rolston, as well as by harpist Judy Loman. The mirror-image solos reflect the classical and contemporary both in concept, camera-styles, dancing and choreography. Filmed at the historic Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto, Evelyn Hart performs "The Dying swan" after Fokine with music by Camille Saint-Saëns. Rex Harrington dances "The Swan sees his reflection" to choreography by Matjash Mrozewski with music by Malcolm Forsyth. Actor Brent Carver's reminiscence of the first immortal Swan, Anna Pavlova, is paired with his reading of Paul Valéry's prose-poem Danse. His spoken word provides the connective tissue between the two dance pieces with a poignant reflection on the vulnerability of dancers and their finite career.
- In the documentary From stage to screen, director Veronica Tennant and the dancers and musicians comment on the making of the film and issues involved in translating dance from stage to camera.
