- Summary
- Emmanuel Morlet from the French Cultural Services, moderates a discussion with composer Marc-André Dalbavie. Dalbavie talks about each of the pieces featured in this program: the U.S. premiere of Palimpseste, the world premiere of Chants, and the New York premiere of Sextine cyclus. Dalbavie describes how each of these pieces fits into the evening's theme of using non-contemporary materials to create something new. The first composition, Palimpseste, is built upon a madrigal by the 16th century composer Gesualdo. Based on Ezra Pound's adaptations of classical poetry and troubadour songs, Dalbavie describes how he composed Chants for the space at the Guggenheim, positioning the singers around the audience. Written for Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Sextine cyclus uses 12th and 13th century German, French and Occitanian poetry. Dalbavie describes how he took these old poems and fragments of melody attached to these old poems, re-composed the melody, and then also composed brand new melodies.
