Summary
  • Disc 1 (ca. 45 min.) and disc 3 (ca. 35 min.), 01/12/84. Recording of the Louis Horst centennial tribute at the Juilliard School held on Jan. 12, 1984. [Disc 3 has superior sound quality for spoken content. Disc 1 includes brief musical accompaniment to the film excerpts shown at the beginning of the program and the musical accompaniment to the performance of El penitente at the end of the program. Introduction by Martha Hill [gap with extraneous noise and music as film excerpts are shown: disc 1 only] followed by an unidentified speaker [Anna Sokolow?], who is followed in turn by Pearl Lang; each reminisces about Horst; Dorothy Bird reminisces about Horst; Jane Dudley speaks about working with Horst; Harry Bernstein reads aloud his statement about Horst and the magazine Dance observer; Ruth Lloyd speaks about Horst's classes for musicians; an unidentified man [Ted Dalbotten?], tells two anecdotes about Horst; Jean Erdman speaks about class with Horst; Martha Hill reads aloud Graham's tribute to Horst; Yuriko speaks about Graham's work El penitente. [Recording of music from El penitente accompanying the performance: disc 1 only].
  • Disc 2, 04/8/84 (ca. 35 min.). Interview with Martha Hill by John Gruen on Apr. 8, 1984. [Unrelated music; announcement.] John Gruen, host of the radio program World of dance, on the radio station WNCN-FM, New York, introduces Martha Hill and her role in the history of modern dance; Hill and Gruen speak about Louis Horst; his early career including his work with Denishawn; reasons Horst left Denishawn with Martha Graham; Horst's pedagogical emphasis on forms; the planned tribute to Horst at the Riverside Church on Apr. 15 [announcements]; Gruen and Hill continue to speak about Horst, including a detailed description of the second planned tribute at Riverside Church on Apr. 22; Horst's personal qualities, including his wittiness; Hill reads aloud the written tribute to Horst from Martha Graham that Hill read at the centennial celebration at the Juilliard School [Hill refers to the year as 1982, but it was in 1984; see summary of discs 1 and 3 above]; other tributes being held both locally and in other states and countries are announced; Gruen speaks further about Hill and the planned tributes to Horst. Note
  • Sound quality is fair to very poor in parts of disc 1. The recording is marred by extraneous noises, including a continuous hissing noise on disc 3. Disc 1 and disc 3 contain substantially the same material, but the audibility of the speakers on disc 3 is far superior to that of disc 1.
  • Discs 1 and 3 each contains a recording of the Louis Horst centennial tribute held at Juilliard School in New York City on Jan. 12, 1984, except that disc 1, of greatly inferior sound quality, contains musical accompaniment not on disc 3. Speakers include Martha Hill, Pearl Lang, Dorothy Bird, Jane Dudley, Harry Bernstein, Jean Erdman, Ruth Lloyd, and Yuriko, as well as two other speakers who are probably Anna Sokolow and Ted Dalbotten. Disc 2 contains a recording of an interview with Martha Hill conducted by John Gruen as host of the radio program World of dance, a series on the station WNCN-FM, New York, on April 8, 1984.
