Summary
Bridget Paolucci moderates a panel discussion about two productions at the New York City Opera; Virgil Thompson and Gertrude Stein's 1947 opera The mother of us all and Wolfganag Amadeus Mozart's last opera composed in 1791, La clemenza di Tito. The panelists for The mother of us all include conductor and music director of the New York City Opera, George Manahan; director, Chrisopher Alden; soprano Wendy Hill; tenor, Matthew Chellis; and in her New York City Opera debut, soprano, Cheryl Hickman. The panel discusses the plot, Virgil Thomson's compositional style, and the lives of Gertrude Stein and Susan B. Anthony, as well as the other characters in the opera. Includes a selection of arias. The panelists for La clemenza di Tito include conductor Harry Bicket; director, Stephen Wadsworth; and in their New York City Opera debuts, tenor Kurt Streit and soprano Tracy Dahl. The panelists discuss the impact of Mozart having written this opera at the end of his life, each of the characters in the opera, the time period in which this version of the opera is set, and details about the production itself. Includes a selection of arias.
