Summary
Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Richard Adler, lyricist, composer and producer of several Broadway shows, discusses his career. Topics include the value of having worked with producer-director George Abbott; the premiere production of The pajama game, directed by Abbott; its role in launching the careers of director Harold Prince and choreographer Bob Fosse; Adler's writing of the song "Steam heat," and the show's songs that made the hit parade, including "Steam heat" and "Hernando's hideaway"; the creation of the show Damn Yankees, also involving Abbott; for which Adler wrote the music, including his showstopping song "You gotta have heart;" the dancing of Gwen Verdon, which in his opinon made the show a hit; Fosse and Verdon's working relationship and marriage; the song "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal Mo" from Damn Yankees; the death in 1955 of his songwriting partner Jerry Ross; Alan Jay Lerner's book and lyrics for My fair lady; his friendship and working relationship with composer Richard Rodgers; Jerry Bock's Fiddler on the roof as the "last great score" for the American musical; the "meaning" of the musical during the 1950s; his favorite musicals, including Gypsy and My fair lady; the future of Broadway. Interview concludes with audio only discussion concerning the hit recording by Rosemary Clooney of his song "Hey there."

Each of its six episodes covers a different era in American theater history, and features the Broadway shows and songs which defined the period. The series draws on feature films, television broadcasts, archival news footage, original cast recordings, still photos, diaries, journals, first-person accounts, and on-camera interviews with many of the principals involved in the development of the genre.
