Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (61 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
This program includes a performance of Steve Reich's Hindenburg, preceded and followed by a panel discussion. Billed as a documentary video opera, Hindenburg blends original video by Beryl Korot with archival footage, including the 1937 zeppelin explosion, and vocal music with archival sound. The panelists discuss their collaboration on the project, which constitutes the first part of a work in process titled Three tales. With the second and third parts, about 1946 nuclear weapons testing on Bikini Atoll and sheep cloning in the 1990s, Three tales examines the evolving role of and attitudes toward technology in the 20th century. The panelists also discuss their use of technological tools in creating the opera, including a keyboard sampler used to produce the instrumental music during this program.
