- Description
- 1 videodisc (NTSC) (66 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- This program includes a panel discussion of Elysium - Between Two Continents' production of Austrian Jewish composer Viktor Ullmann's The emperor of Atlantis, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the opera. Panelists discuss the circumstances of the opera's creation by Ullmann and librettist Peter Kien in the Nazi concentration camp of Theresienstadt during the early 1940s. They also talk about the contemporary political parallels to the opera's story of a warmongering emperor and his dealings with the figure of Death, about the creative ferment at Theresienstadt, and about the production's directorial and design approaches.
