Summary
This program features a panel discussion about the art of pantomime in ballet, interspersed with performances by American Ballet Theatre dancers. The panelists discuss the history of pantomime as an expressive form, how the gestures came to be formally incoporated into 19th-century ballet, and the role of modern practitioners in preserving the form. Excerpts from Giselle and La fille mal gardée illustrate classical pantomime style, while the more naturalistic dramatic movements found in 20th-century ballet are demonstrated through excerpts from Onegin and Romeo and Juliet. The dancers talk about the importance of the dramatic element in their performances, and Parkinson recalls her experience creating the character of Rosaline in MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet.
