Summary
This program centers on a panel discussion of Shakespeare's tragedies and their continuing relevance. Director Matthew Warchus discusses his modern-dress Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet, and actress Tina Packer discusses her involvement in The Lear project, a cross-gender version of King Lear which casts Olympia Dukakis Lear and Packer as the Fool. The panelists, who also include New Yorker writers Anthony Lane and Simon Schama, all address the "messiness" of Shakespeare's tragedies, the blurred lines between comedy and tragedy in the plays, the issue of the overfamiliarity of certain texts, the comparative approach of American and English actors to Shakespeare, and the tragedies' meaning to contemporary audiences. The panel discussion is followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
