Summary
This program features panel discussions of two new productions for the 2001 New York City Opera season: Vincenzo Bellini's Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues) and W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan's The Mikado. The first group of panelists discusses Bellini's bel canto musical techniques in Capuleti e i Montecchi, and the decision to set the New York City Opera production in 1910 Italy. Two arias from the opera, Giulietta's O quante valte and Romeo's Se Romeo t'uccise un figlio, are performed. The panelists from the New York City Opera's Mikado production talk about the change of setting from Japan to 1920s England, the complexities of staging and choreographing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and the influence of Marx Brothers movies. The discussion is interspersed with performances from the operetta.
