- David Richardson speaks with Rose Anne Thom about auditioning for George Balanchine for admission to SAB [the School of American Ballet]; his prior training at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo school; his first teachers at the School of American Ballet: AntoninaTumkovsky, [Helene] Dudin, and Muriel Stuart; comparing the style of teaching at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo school with that of the School of American Ballet; the first men's class; some of his classmates; dancing the Prince in The nutcracker, including being coached by Balanchine; the atmosphere at New York City Ballet and at the School of American Ballet at the time; his impressions of Lincoln Kirstein; leaving the School of American Ballet to dance with American Ballet Theatre; leaving American Ballet Theatre and returning to the school; soon thereafter becoming a member of the New York City Ballet; his teachers [Anatole] Oboukhoff, [Pierre] Vladimiroff, and [Felia] Doubrovska; what he learned in particular from Tumkovsky, Stuart, Vladimiroff, and Oboukhoff; other teachers at the school; how he came to be the children's ballet master; his increasing responsibilities in that position; casting and training the children including working with Balanchine; the characteristics of Balanchine's choreography for the children; Richardson's relationship with the parents of the children; Jerome Robbins' work Circus polka including working with Robbins on remounting it for the Paris Opera Ballet [Opéra de Paris Ballet] and then using it as a workshop production for the school; teaching, for a relatively short period, at the School of American Ballet; reasons for leaving his position as the children's ballet master and joining American Ballet Theatre as ballet master, at the invitation of Mikhail Baryshnikov; his relationship with the School of American Ballet after he left.
