  • Non-profit foundation established in 1911. The Fund's act of incorporation specified that the Fund be used for "the erection and improvement of tenement house dwellings in the city of New York for the poor...," and "the education of Negroes, both in Africa and the United States, North American Indians and needy and deserving white students."
  • The Washington Bureau was established in 1972 as a liason office of the Phelps-Stokes Fund and by 1975 was responsible for coordinating all domestic programs of the Fund.

Summary
Collection contains some material pertaining to the New York State Colonization Society, supported by the Phelps Stokes family, which supported the founding of Liberia as a new African state for repatriating blacks. Records include correspondence, minutes, and financial documents pertaining to the colonization of Afro-Americans, Liberia, and African education. Phelps-Stokes Fund records consist of correspondence, minutes, financial documents including ledgers, statements, and vouchers; legal documents including wills, agreements, and mortgages; literary productions including manuscripts, speeches, special reports, and occasional papers; printed matter including pamphlets, brochures, clippings, press releases, and programs; maps; blueprints; lists; and photographs. Included are records concerning the administration and business mangement of the Phelps-Stokes Fund (PSF), matters concerning the PSF's Board of Trustees; "charter programs," i.e. programs specified in the original act of incorporation of PSF, conferences on race relations, foundations, general funding, and the archives.
PSF records contain material of special interest on the Booker T. Washington Agricultural and Industrial Institute of Liberia, the American Colonization Society, predominantly black colleges, the Cooperative College Development Program and the United Negro College Fund, South African Race Relations Institute, Indian Rights Association, Capahosic conferences, Caribbean-American exchange programs, the Mellon Haitian Nurses Training Project, Kwame Nkrumah and the University of Ghana, Fela Sowanda on Nigerian art and music, Christian missions in Africa, Ojike Memorial Medical Center (Nigeria), Harvey Firestone and Liberia, the American Council on Education, the Southern Regional Council, the American Society of African Culture, and the Ralph Bunche Institute on the United Nations project. Noteworthy correspondents include Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Ralph J. Bunche, W.E.B. Du Bois, Dwight Eisenhower, Harvey S. Firestone, Jr., Charles S. Johnson, Lyndon B. Johnson, Alan Paton, Pearl Primus, and Henry L. Stimson. Files of Channing Tobias, director of PSF from 1946-1953, consisting of correspondence, minutes, announcements, and reports.
Office files of President Franklin H. Williams, 1972-1979, consisting of correspondence, minutes, press releases, a report, clippings on American foreign policy toward South Africa, relations between the private sector in the United States and nations in Africa, the United Nations, African Student Aid, and material of special interest on Mozambique, Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), Relief for Africans, Ralph Bunche Institute, and TransAfrica. Correspondents include George McGovern, Randall Robinson, and Mabel Murphy Smythe. Series of photographs by Bob Adelman, 1977, published in a book format, depicting New York City "neighborhoods foresaken by the rest of society" with an accompanying "petition for the ill-housed of New York City to the President of the United States of America." Tape recording of Ralph J. Bunche memorial, 1980. Also, records of the Washington Bureau of PSF, including records of domestic programs and projects of the PSF. Bulk of records are of the administrator, Marie Gadsen, and project files for Indian Education, Long Range Planning/Management Development, Cooperative Education, and Black Women's Community Development programs. Included are transcripts of oral history interviews conducted in 1981 of former PSF employees including Wilton S. Dillon, Guy B. Johnson, Joseph Rodgers, Myrta Ross (Mrs. Emory Ross), Herman R. Branson, Anson Phelps Stokes, Jr., Dr. Aaron Brown, and Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes II.
