Biography (note)

• Ousmane Sembène is a major African writer and recognized as Africa's best known film producer and director Sembene has been referred to as the father of African cinema. He was born January 1, 1923 in the city of Ziguinchor in Senegal. Recipient of numerouse film awards and honors, he encouraged other Black African filmmakers to produce their works in the vernacular languages of Africa. In spite of early Muslim influences, his works, both literary and visual, portrayed secular motifs. Film, an instrument of political action, became the medium to reach the largely illiterate masses; it was intended as a catalyst for social change.
