Summary
The oral history interview with Utrice Lead covers her her early life in Trinidad and immigration to New York City. The interview is devoted primarily to her career in journalism, beginning with the creation in 1976 of the Trans-Urban News Service with Andrew W. Cooper, a columnist for the New York “Amsterdam News;” the co-founding of The City Sun with Cooper in 1984 and her resignation in 1992; and her involvement with WBAI. She discusses the controversy that followed her appointment as general manager of the station, as well as the state of black journalism.
