Summary
This documentary explores four ballets choreographed by Frederick Ashton with music by Igor Stravinsky. Each section includes in-depth analysis of the ballet's choreography and how it reflects the musical score, with demonstrations, coaching sessions and performances of excerpts. Antoinette Sibley coaches Mara Galeazzi in the ballerina's first and second solos from Scènes de ballet, and speaks about the ballet. Brief excerpts from other works by Ashton are also demonstrated for purposes of comparison. The section on Persephone includes an archival film of Persephone and Pluto's second duet, performed by Svetlana Beriosova and Keith Rosson. Nicola Katrak coaches Natasha Oughtred in the bride's solo from Baiser de la fée. This section also includes a performance of the bride's solo from the version of Baiser de la fée choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, and the same solo from the version choreographed by 1937 by George Balanchine, performed by Nichol Hlinka and coached by Frederic Franklin. Anthony Dowell coaches Federico Bonelli in the fisherman's solos from Rossignol. Full recordings of some of the performances and rehearsals excerpted in the documentary appear in the special features section at the end.
