- Biography (note)
- Al Perryman, African American dancer and choreographer, was born in Monroe, Louisiana, in 1945. Raised in New York City, he began his dancing career at age three, making his first televised appearance at age nine and later appearing on various television programs. He later performed with various dance troupes and companies, including Eleo Pomare, Jo Jo Smith and the Brooklyn Dance Theater, where he served as artistic director from 1979 to 1985. Perryman also appeared on Broadway in such productions as "Purlie," "Raisin" and "The Wiz," and choreographed the 1983 musical "Amen Corner." He also taught at various universities, dance companies and urban community centers. Perryman died in Brooklyn, New York, in 1985.

- The collection depicts aspects of Al Perryman's professional career as a dancer and choreographer, mainly from the mid-1960s to 1983. The collection consists of studio and candid portraits of Perryman; studio portraits of Perryman with dance partners, including principal partner Loretta Abbott; candid views of Perryman, individually and with other dancers, in dance class, in rehearsal and during performances, including his work with the Brooklyn Dance Theater; dance production stills featuring Perryman; candid views of Perryman with friends and colleagues; and candid views and dance production stills of other individual dancers and dance companies. Many images were probably used for publicity purposes. Depictions of Perryman's personal life are limited.
