- Summary
- Dr. Gerard Mortier speaks about the nature, history and future of opera. Dr. Mortier discusses the nature of singing; love, death, eroticism and grace in operatic stories; the opera audience as a community; the staging and costumes for operas. The lecture also includes slides of opera stagings and audio clips of vocal performances, including clips of Elvis Presley, Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald, and arias from Monteverdi's Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Rossini's Turco in Italia. The program concludes with a live performance of Parto, parto, an aria from Mozart's opera Clemenza di Tito.
