Known as New Jazz at the Public, the series was launched by theatrical producer Joseph Papp and originally coordinated by Andrew Plesser. It made the Public one of the leading venues for new jazz through 1987. Performances by such artists as Pat Metheny, Steve Lacy, Chico Freeman, Archie Shepp, Jaki Byard, Don Pullen, Betty Carter, David Murray, Sun Ra, Anthony Braxton, Dave Burrell, Michael Gregory Jackson, Leroy Jenkins, Gil Evans, John Zorn, Jack DeJohnette, Papa Zaka and Milton Cardona incorporated a wide variety of musical styles and forms of expression.
