- In July 1972 theatrical producer Joseph Papp received an $8 million contract to produce thirteen Shakespeare plays, in addition to contemporary works for the CBS television network over a four-year period. The first production, Much ado about nothing as directed by A. J. Antoon, was broadcast February 2, 1973. The second production, David Rabe's play Sticks and bones, aired on August 17, 1973. The broadcast had been postponed for several months due to conflict with the network's over viewers' sensitivity to the play's subject.
