- Summary
- The rise and development of Off-Broadway theater is examined in this episode of Best talk in town, with emphasis on the challenges faced by smaller companies in a changing cultural and financial climate. Program begins with analysis of the prolonged success of the musical The fantasticks, followed by excerpts from the Village Voice's Off Broadway ("Obie") Awards ceremony, including discussion with Ross Wetzsteon, chairman of the Obie Committee, and very brief interviews with recipients. Next, John Bishop directs an unidentified production for the Circle Repertory Company as the organization's artistic director Tanya Berezin discusses the evolution of the troupe's goals, and reflects on financial difficulties facing small, independent production groups. Mr. Bishop contributes brief remarks on his approach to working with actors. Lastly, the program looks at African-American and Hispanic theatre troupes in New York City's outer boroughs. Brief looks at the works of the Black Spectrum Theatre, Opera Ebony, and the Billie Holiday Theatre, and brief interviews with the participants illustrate the role these troupes play as a training ground for actors and other theatre artists.
