- Summary
- Rough cut of profile of theatrical producer Joseph Papp. Includes interviews with theater executive Bernard Jacobs, actors Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, playwright Larrry Kramer, Public Theater resident director Wilford Leach, and Gail Merrifield, head of play development at the Public Theater. Papp discusses his childhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; his views on the musical A chorus line; and developing an audience for the theater among New York City's schoolchildren. Narrative discussion includes Papp's creation of the Public Theater in 1967; Papp's role in launching the careers of many well-known actors and playwrights; his decision to produce The normal heart, a controversial play about the AIDS health crisis; his unsuccessful fight to save two Broadway theaters from destruction; and Papp as a theatrical showman. Includes depiction of a meeting with Gail Merrifield Papp; Papp leading Passover seder with his family; rehearsals of The normal heart; Papp rehearsing a song he plans to sing at a benefit performance.
