Description
2 videodiscs (DVD) (152 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  • "As in Lohengrin, Wilson reduced Madame Butterfly to its essential elements, avoiding the traditional sets and costumes and focusing on the movement of the singers. The story, in which a Japanese woman, Cio-Cio San, becomes romantically involved with a U.S. naval officer, Pinkerton, is presented by Wilson in the manner of the traditional Japanese No drama. In this he was assisted by his long-time collaborator, Suzushi Hanayagi, one of Japan's leading classical dancers. Aside from a small number of objects, the sets were bare, and most props were imaginary."--robertwilson.com.
  • Interviews and and performance recording from dress rehearsal for Robert Wilson's production of Madama Butterfly. Wilson interviewed about Madama Butterfly, then discusses his productions and projects: Pelléas et Mélisande, Salome, Dr. Faustus, Monsters of grace, Time rocker, and The lady from the sea. Backstage interviews follow with other participants in the production, including Anna Maria Di Micco, Gabriel Sadé, Katerina Kudriavchenko, and Marco Guidarini. Footage of unidentified newscaster and interior of Teatro comunale included. Recording ends with incomplete dress rehearsal of Madama Butterfly.
