- Summary
- This program was part of a week-long series of films relating to Merce Cunningham shown on MetroArts/Thirteen. The program begins with an interview in which Cunningham discusses the relationship between music and dance in his work, and his collaboration with John Cage. Cunningham also discusses the making of the 1981 film Channels/Inserts. The complete film of Channels/Inserts is included at the end of the documentary Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This documentary explores the work and collaboration of John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Interviews of Cage and Cunningham are interspersed with scenes of each artist in action, including excerpts from Nam June Paik and Charles Atlas's Merce by Merce by Paik (1975) and other film and video works. Following the documentary, the program concludes with the dance film Locale, and Roamin' I, which consists of outtakes from the filming of Locale.
