- Summary
- This program was part of a week-long series of films relating to Merce Cunningham shown on MetroArts/Thirteen. The program begins with an interview in which Cunningham discusses how he became interested in working with film. The video event, made for the series Camera three, is in two sections of 30 min. each. Part 1 begins with footage of Cunningham teaching and rehearsing his company, and discussing the purpose of his teaching and his choreographic process. Cunningham comments on each of the choreographic segments performed in the program, which include excerpts from Winterbranch, Second hand, Sounddance (identified as a work in progress), and TV rerun. Part 2 begins with a solo performed by Cunningham, and comments from Cunningham on the meaning of movement and ambiguity in his work. The segments performed in part 2 include excerpts from Changing steps (shown on four screens), Landrover, and Signals. The second film, Merce Cunningham and company, is a documentary in French with English subtitles. It includes an introductory biography of Merce Cunningham followed by interviews with him on his aesthetics and choreographic methods. Alternating is footage showing the company rehearsing sections from Trails, Scramble, Aeon, Quartet, Suite for five, Roadrunners, and Fractions.
