Segment one (ca. 3 min.): Good morning America, aired WABC-TV, Channel 7, 9/18/86. David Hartman interviews Joseph Papp on the health of Broadway theater. Papp speaks on the need to create a new audience for Broadway and his efforts in that area through the Belasco Project, which will enable 200,000 New York City schoolchildren to attend free performances of Shakespearean plays. Segment two (ca. 3 min.): CBS news, aired WCBS-TV, Channel 2, 5/18/86. Joan Snyder reports on a unique production of Shakespeare's As you like it designed to get high school students interested in great drama. The performance is part of an educational program begun with $1.5 million raised by theatrical producer Joseph Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival. The program will enable 2,500 students each week to see a play performed by a multi-racial cast of actors, at the Public Theater free of charge. Segment begins at 6 min.
Segment three (ca. 23 min.): Today in New York, aired WNBC-TV, Channel 4, 1/8/86. Host Ponchitta Pierce moderates a discussion on Shakespeare with producer/director Joseph Papp, actors Meagan Fay and William Duff-Griffin and New York City area schoolchildren. The guests perform scenes from Shakespeare. Segment begins at 9:00.

The Belasco Project, also known as Shakespeare on Broadway, was started by Joseph Papp and the New York Shakespeare Festival in cooperation with the New York City Board of Education and the Shubert Theater. The Festival initially put up $1.5 million for the project which was later funded with a $500,000 grant from the Long Island newspaper Newsday. During the mid-1980s, plays such as Macbeth, As you like it and Romeo and Juliet were performed at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway for hundreds of thousands of junior and senior high school students, teachers and parents by a multi-racial company of actors, directed by Estelle Parsons. The program also incorporated discussion sessions between actors and students, held in classrooms and in the theater.
