- Summary
- Phil Donahue discusses Ntozake Shange's For colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf with three cast members from the national touring company, currently performing in Chicago. The discussion with LaTanya Richardson, Beverly Anne and Paula Larke is conducted before an audience of African American women. Topics include the reaction to the work in Chicago, including the perception that it is "anti-male"; the problems as well as satisfactions of Black women in their relationships with Black men; the play's meaning and message, including the Black woman's quest to become more self-sufficient, self-aware and self-loving. Program includes a performance by each cast member and question and answer sessions with the audience. Tape ends abruptly.

- Ntozake Shange's For colored girls . . . is a group of 20 "chorepoems" on the power of Black women to survive in the face of adversity. The work which was developed into a theater piece for seven actors opened at the Public Theater/Anspacher Theater in June 1976, directed by Oz Scott. The show's success made producer Joseph Papp decide to move it to the Booth Theater on September 15 where it ran for almost two years.
