- Biography (note)
- The association between Czechoslovakian playwright Václav Havel (b.1936) and theatrical producer Joseph Papp (1921-1991) began in 1966 when Papp optioned Havel's play The memorandum. The absurdist play that examined the workings of bureaucracy was staged at the Public Theater/Anspacher Theater during the 1968 season, directed by Papp. Papp invited Havel to the opening of the play which won an Obie for best foreign play. During the next two decades, Papp kept in touch with Havel as the playwright worked as a manual laborer, became a leading Czech dissident, was jailed, and later was elected president of his country.
