- Summary
- Profile of Dame Ninette de Valois, reverentially called "Madam," depicting her multifaceted roles of dancer, choreographer, teacher, and company director. The program explores her significance as the founder of a national ballet company, school, and style in Britain, and the personal qualities that enabled her achievements. Topics include her collaboration with visionary theater manager Lilian Baylis of the Sadler's Wells Theatre; the formation of the Sadler's Wells Ballet (later the Royal Ballet); the founding and expansion of her school; her choreographic works, often based on English themes, and characterized by a strong sense of drama; her ability to recognize talent in her dancers; her collaboration with composer-conductor Constant Lambert; her recruitment of Frederick Ashton as choreographer for her company. Former dancers from her company discuss her teaching style, and the qualities she tried to instill in her students; they also contrast her choreographic method with that of Ashton. In addition to archival footage of her ballets, members of the Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet are seen in rehearsal footage of recent revivals of The rake's progress, The prospect before us, The gods go a-begging, and Checkmate.
