Summary

Profile of Mary Wigman, a pioneer of German modern dance. This documentary explores the state of dance in her youth; her training at the Dalcroze School in Hellerau, and with Rudolf Laban in Ascona; her innovative choreography, with its emphasis on the expression of the human condition; the formation of her school, which was to train new generations of German dancers; her tours of the United States, and her influence there; her vicissitudes in Hitler's Germany; her perseverance in handing on her art to young dancers. Wigman herself is seen dancing in several solos: Witch dance [Hexentanz]; Seraphisches Lied (Seraphic song), Pastorale, and Sommerlicher Tanz from Swinging landscape [Schwingende Landschaft]; Totenmal; and Abschied und Dank, which she danced at her last public performance. Her dancers are seen in Wanderung [from Szenen aus einem Tanzdrama]; and her students Harald Kreutzberg, Dore Hoyer, and Susanne Linke are glimpsed in their own choreography.
