- Summary
- Part of The Studies Project, an ongoing series of discussions, performances, and other presentations. Panel discussion on the challenges facing a choreographer in maintaining a company of dancers to perform his or her work. Much of the discussion focuses on the twin concerns of artistic development and economic survival. Topics include: the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional dance company; the decrease in financial support for dance, combined with increased competition for limited resources; alternate ways of bringing together choreographers and dancers; the benefits of making connections with the wider community; a dancer's viewpoint of his/her relationship with a company or choreographer, in terms of artistic growth as well as financial security; the challenges of working outside the traditional dance company model, and the lack of stability even within that model; the rise of new managerial procedures, and the difficulties they present. Also discussed are larger questions of the economic viability of experimental dance, and the valuation of dance in American culture. Sali Ann Kriegsman, the director of the Dance Program of the National Endowment for the Arts, clarifies terms of the NEA's grants to individuals and companies.
