- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (63 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Unedited footage recorded for the documentary Limón: a life beyond words. Pauline Koner was an established dance soloist when she first began to dance with José Limón, and for many years appeared as a guest artist with his company concurrently with her own performances. Among the many roles she created for Limón were Emilia in his masterwork The moor's pavane and the title role of La Malinche. She discusses her early training with Russian balletmaster Michel Fokine; dancing with Limón for the first time in Doris Humphrey's The story of mankind; Limón's qualities as a dancer; the difficulties of working with him; dancing The moor's pavane at the White House; the creation of The moor's pavane; her interpretation of Emilia, and the choreographic challenge of Pauline Lawrence's costume design; her favorite piece by Limón, The visitation; the creation of La Malinche; the lack of recognition for Humphrey's valuable contributions as choreographer and artistic adviser; dancing with Limón in Mexico at the invitation of Miguel Covarrubias. With Ann Vachon she further explores the Limón company's experiences in Mexico; Lucas Hoving's development as a dramatic dancer; and the creation of characters in The moor's pavane, its first performance, and Humphrey's choreographic advice about its conclusion.
