- Summary
- Unedited footage recorded for the documentary Limón: a life beyond words. Interview with Lucas Hoving (1912-2000), a longtime principal dancer with the José Limón Dance Company, and the creator of the role of the Moor's friend (Iago) in Limón's masterwork The moor's pavane. Because of Hoving's advanced age and hearing difficulties at the time of this interview, the discussion is somewhat fragmented, with occasional repetitions and memory lapses.

- Cassette 1 (ca. 61 min.). Tape begins with candid footage; interview starts after ca. 7 min. Hoving, who was born in the Netherlands, discusses his arrival in the U.S. with Kurt Jooss's dance company; his first meeting with Limón; his lack of affinity for the choreography of Doris Humphrey, Limón's artistic adviser, with the exception of Ruins and visions; the pivotal role that The moor's pavane played in his life; the choreographic contributions made to it by him and Pauline Koner [who danced the role of Emilia]; the dance works Dialogues, Visitation, and The traitor; works danced by "Vinny" [Lavina Nielsen, Hoving's wife]; Limón's reserve about discussing either his works or his emotions; the strong influence exerted upon Limón by three women: his wife Pauline Lawrence, Koner, and Doris Humphrey; Limón's personal qualities; a meeting between Jooss, Limón, and himself in Paris; his opinion that there is no actual Limón technique.
- Cassette 2. Conclusion of interview (ca. 28 min.). Hoving discusses his roles in The Emperor Jones and The traitor; his participation in The moor's pavane; his admiration of Limón's Missa brevis, which he never danced, and its notable interpreters Clay [Taliaferro] and Carlos [Orta]; the role of Jooss and Limón as important forces in his life; the human quality of Missa brevis. Following the interview, photographs of Hoving, Limón, and others are filmed (ca. 5 min.); the voices of Hoving, Vachon, and others are audible off-camera, and some of the photographers are orally identified. Photographs of The moor's pavane, La Malinche, and other works are depicted. Views of the California landscape (ca. 2 min.) close the recording.
