- [The Ark] (ca. 11 min.) / exterior views of the Ark, a white-painted wooden building on the campus of Duke University in Durham, N.C. The Ark, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1998, is used for the dance program's classes and performances, and is rented by the American Dance Festival during its summers at the university.
- [Interview with Betty Jones, part 1] (ca. 42 min.) / recorded at Duke University in Durham, N.C., during the American Dance Festival, summer 1996; interviewer, Ann Vachon. Betty Jones, who danced with the José Limón Dance Company from 1947-1972, discusses her first meeting with Limón at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival; her acceptance into the company; dancing in Doris Humphrey's Corybantic; her observations of the working relationship of Limón and Humphrey, his artistic adviser; her distress at recent reconstructions of Humphrey's choreography; how she began to teach and assist Limón in his classes; the evolution of her own teaching, incorporating aspects of ballet and Dr. Lulu Sweigard's movement theories; and Limón's use of music. Jones, who is a pre-eminent teacher of the Humphrey-Limón style, shares her insights into its special qualities and values.
- Cassette 2. [Interview with Betty Jones, part 2] (ca. 61 min.) / Betty Jones discusses working with Doris Humphrey; Limón's wish that his technique should not be codified; Daniel Lewis's book [The illustrated dance technique of José Limón, c1984]; the creation of Limón's masterwork The moor's pavane, in which she danced the role of Desdemona, the Moor's wife; the question of how much dancers actually contribute to choreograph; Limón's sense of humor; the frugality of his wife Pauline Lawrence [referred to in the discussion as "Pauline-my-wife"]; the contrast of his apparent lack of religiosity and the religious vein in many of his works; his enjoyment of bawdy jokes; dancing in Limón's There is a time; the importance of breadth, the use of space, and strength in dancing his choreography; his unwillingness to analyze or explain his works in rehearsal; possible interpretations of his work Missa brevis; his enjoyment of working in his native Mexico; his enduring belief in the nobility and goodness of man; and the many functions performed for the Limón company by Pauline Lawrence, with examples of her acerbic wit.
