Summary
This program, in the series Originals in art, presents a portrait of Merce Cunningham. Cunningham's comments (excerpted from an interview) are interspersed with archival footage of performances and rehearsals by Cunningham and his company. In part 1 Cunningham discusses the necessity of dance in his life; the beginning of his career, including his dissatisfaction with Martha Graham's style, his collaboration with John Cage, and the development of his technique and ideas about dance; why he started teaching; early tours with his company; how he chooses dancers for his company; his use of chance operations in choreography; Robert Rauschenberg's decor for Story; the independence of music, dance and visual components in his work. In part two, Cunningham discusses his ideas on how to increase awareness of dance in the public; Museum event no. 1 in Vienna; his ideas about stage space; his work with video; his use of Life Forms software; innovation and complexity in his work.
