Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (120 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
These programs present a sample of the training received by students in the Jacob's Pillow jazz project. Director Lynn Simonson speaks about the organization and purpose of the project. Sara Neece directs students in ballet barre exercises and allegro combinations. Lynn Simonson directs a jazz warmup and choreographic studies. Guest teacher Gene Foote presents a work in the style of Bob Fosse, choreographed by Foote to I've got the world on a string. The piece is performed by two groups of students. Students perform two traditional Hawaiian dances learned from visiting Hawaiian artists, one danced by men and the other by women. Two groups of students perform a tap combination originally created by Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. At the end of the program the students introduce themselves and Simonson answers questions from the audience about the project. The second program contains the same material, but does not contain the Hawaiian and tap routines. At the end of the second program Simonson, Jacob's Pillow director Liz Thompson and others speak about the scholarship program for students and make appeals for donations to the program.
