Summary
This tape contains excerpts from a workshop in American Indian dance conducted by members of American Indian Dance Theatre. The workshop begins with exercises in movement and chanting. Director Hanay Geiogamah speaks about the American Indian Dance Theatre and the members introduce themselves and identify their tribes. Geiogamah discusses the different dances and dance styles performed by the company; competition dancing and the powwow circuit; improvisation and musicality in dancing; the songs and rhythms used for dancing; the differences between men's and women's dance styles; the origins and meaning of the grass dance and hoop dance; the costumes worn for dancing. Dancers demonstrate women's and men's traditional and fancy dance styles. Students are divided into groups to learn women's shawl dancing, men's traditional and men's fancy dancing. The groups practice and then perform what they have learned in a competition. Eddie Swimmer performs the hoop dance, and the workshop closes with a dance circle.
