Summary
Awards ceremony and celebration of the 40th anniversary of the American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards. The program begins by honoring four winners of the first Tony Awards: Helen Hayes, José Ferrer, Agnes de Mille, and Michael Kidd. A retrospective of songs and dances from musicals of the past continues throughout the program, interspersed between the awards. Also presented are excerpts from the four nominated musicals: The mystery of Edwin Drood, Song and dance, Big deal, and Tango argentino (the last seen in pre-recorded footage). William Hurt and Isabelle Stevenson briefly discuss the activities of the American Theatre Wing. In a tribute to the past 40 years of Tony Award winning plays, distinguished actors of the past and present speak their most memorable lines. Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, was nominated for best actor in a musical, and is glimpsed in the audience at the announcement of that award.
