- Summary
- Producer/director Joseph Papp comments on the Swedish made-for-television movie Den tragiska historien om Hamlet--Prins av Denmark during its broadcast on WNYC-TV. The 1985 film, directed by Ragnar Lyth and translated by Jan Mark, is based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. Includes Papp's introduction to the film, his comments during intermission, and discussion following the film with actress Diane Venora, who played Hamlet in the in the New York Shakespeare Festival's stage production in 1982. Includes the final credits for the film.
- Papp responds to criticism of Lyth's alteration of the original Shakespearean text; producing Shakespeare for the stage in comparison with film; Lyth's cinematic success in conveying Hamlet's view of Denmark as a prison; the film's violent ending; Shakespeare's use of violence; the film's portrayal of Hamlet's final scene and its interpretation of Hamlet's appointment of Fortinbras as his successor; Shakespeare's use of dialogue to express visual imagery; the possibilities of rendering Shakespearean dialogue accurately on film; the need to interpret Shakespeare broadly, including on film and for the stage; and the ambiguousness of Hamlet and the play's mystery. Venora discussion includes the film as an artistic endeavor and Papp's decision to cast Venora as Hamlet. Includes a clip of Venora playing the dying Hamlet, from the television adaptation of the New York Shakespeare Festival production.
