Summary
Images show the recreational pursuits of African Americans, mostly on the East coast, in the 1940s and 1950s. Photos depict summer camps, beaches, amusement parks, barbecues and picnics, sports, and hobbies. Identified camps are Camp Minisink, Port Jervis, New Jersey; Camp Gaylord White, Arden, New York (1943); Wangum Lodge, Weathersfield, Connecticut; and Hillmans Summer Camp, Washington D.C. Sunbathers are shown at Orchard Beach, Bronx, New York (1952) and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Hobbies show doll collecting, model railroads, and quilting. Sports captured are ball playing, cycling and swimming. Of note is a series of shots showing groups enjoying Rye Playland amusement park, Rye, New York (1948).
